These last weeks are going fast as we round third base. Finishing up with our first few clients, we are now faced with a whole new challenge; loosening up. Our last few clients have leaned towards more clean designs (formal,) but our new clients our giving us the freedom to do a little more. We have been encouraged to be playful with our wording for one of our clients specifically. This ironically has been somewhat more of a challenge for me than a blessing. It’s funny, but I keep getting flashbacks of my high school English teacher arguing that I was too colorful in my writing where I should be more to the point. When you’re that age, no one tells you that if you work in advertising, sometimes cheesier is better. So, I’m sitting in the library going through puns in my head. I’ve written down close to thirty different ideas for slogans, and for the life of me I can’t make it cheesy without hearing fingernails on a chalkboard. The experience is invigorating. I’m a firm believer that the best work in any art form, comes from pressure. The feeling of having your back against a wall is what drives you to do things you never thought you could. This is a big reason that as a class we have all grown so significantly. A few weeks ago, our professor Jeff told us a story. He was talking about an experiment he did with a volleyball team he coached. He drew a line on the wall and asked the girls to all jump as close to it as they could. Seventy percent of the girls hit the line. What he noticed was that the girls who hadn’t hit the line that day were jumping higher during games. He drew another line on the wall without telling the team. This one was a fair amount higher. When the girls came to practice the next day, he asked them to try again. Like before, seventy percent of the team hit the line, but the thirty percent that hadn’t been able to hit it before, were now jumping over the original line. No one told the girls that this was a different line. They hadn’t gotten stronger overnight. This experiment told Jeff one thing. Thirty percent of the girls on his team had the potential to do more than they were aware. This is how I feel many of us are. We envision what we can accomplish before we step on the field or turn on the computer. It’s only when we are put in a situation that we never thought we’d be in, where we accomplish things we never thought we could. So, if you get the chance, come back to our website to see some new designs. I have a feeling you’ll like what you find.
